Staff Retreat
One of the many fun parts of being on staff at LLYC is
attending the staff retreat weekend. During this retreat, we
bring together our newly hired staff for a relaxing weekend of
fun and fellowship. The weekend allows us to focus a little on
the upcoming summer, but it serves mostly as a time to hang
out and have fun together. The retreat begins Friday at 6:00
p.m. and ends at noon on Sunday. Staff Retreat is April
11-13 at Echo Valley.
Work Crew/Program
Crew Retreat
Crew Training Weekend will be April 11-13 at Singing Hills. The
purpose of this weekend is to prepare the crew for what is
ahead in Summer 2008. All crew must attend this training
weekend.
Central Leadership Staff Retreat
This retreat will be held March 28-30, 2008. The purpose
of this retreat is to enjoy fellowship and begin the process
of working together as a leadership team for summer '08.
All Central Leadership Staff must attend this retreat.
Friendship Festival (FF)
This is our annual volunteer work weekend. Campers and their
parents volunteer time and labor to prepare camp for the
summer. FF brings families together in a relaxed atmosphere to
work, play, and share with one another. This event provides
our staff the opportunity to connect with campers, parents,
friends, and former staff to share the unique experience of
LLYC.
The weekend is staffed with approximately a dozen energetic
individuals ready to serve families and get camp ready to go.
If you are interested in helping us staff this weekend, you
would need to commit to working from 5:00 p.m. Friday through
cleanup on Sunday. We hope you can join us.
Friendship Festival will be held at Echo Valley, May 9-11.
Adventure Recreation Training
Each summer, we train some of our staff to facilitate our
adventure recreation program. We teach facilitation of
the Alpine Tower, climbing, rappelling, and other high element
experiences. We also challenge the facilitator to
learn that the adventure experience is much more than simply
accomplishing an element. Trust, problem solving,
communication, and teamwork are just a few of the issues and
lessons we try to convey.
This training is an intense commitment physically and
emotionally. A lot of information is thrown your way in
a short amount of time. We would like to train as many
people on our staff as possible to enhance our adventure
recreation program. This training is split into two
components. The first training (camp crafts training)
will cover the facilitation of our natural climb and rappel
sites. This training will be held May 18-21. The
second training (Alpine Tower training) will cover the
facilitation of our Alpine Tower (ropes course). This
training will be held May 23-26. If you are interested
and available for either or both of these trainings, please
check the appropriate dates on your application.
Lifeguard Training
Because of all the water activities that take place at
LLYC, we need certified lifeguards. Our goal is to have
every member of our counselor staff current in lifeguard
certification.
This can happen in one of two ways. First, you may take a lifeguard class in your town prior to camp, which LLYC will pay for.
Please check your local Red Cross for times and
dates of certification. We also offer two training
classes at camp prior to staff week.
These classes are May 18-21 and May 23-26.
Shooting Sports Training
Shooting sports is a popular activity in which counselors
teach campers to shoot .22 rifles, 20-gauge shotguns, .50
caliber black powder rifles, and compound bows. This
training will cover safety, range management, use of the
firearms and bows, and making the activity exciting.
This training will begin May 23 and end May 25.
Work Week
This week serves to finalize getting camp physically ready for
the summer. We also offer various certification courses for
many of our camp activities. This is a great week to
become acclimated to LLYC. This is a volunteer week that
begins May 22 and ends May 27. If you are interested in
attending Work Week, please mark the dates on your
application. Central Staff members are required to attend work week.
Staff Week
All paid staff are required to attend Staff Week. Staff
Week is a period of staff training and a time to learn the
specifics of LLYC. It also serves as a great opportunity
for you to meet everyone and prepare for the incredible summer
ahead. Staff Week dates are May 29 - June 5.
Time Commitment
At LLYC, we hire on a half-summer and full-summer basis.
A full-summer commitment begins Staff Week, May 29, and ends Sunday, August 10, after final
cleanup. If you work all summer, you are making a
ten-week commitment. If you are currently in high school, you are only eligible to work for half of the summer.
First Half
Summer staff that work only the first half of the summer are
required to be at camp for Staff Week starting May 29.
First Half ends after Jam Session on July 12. After
final cleanup, staff will be dismissed on Saturday, July 12,
by 2:00 p.m.
Second Half
Summer staff that work only the second half of the summer are
required to be at camp for Staff Week starting May 29.
Second Half staff are dismissed from Staff Week on Thursday,
June 5. Second Half begins on Saturday, July 12.
The summer ends on Sunday, August 10.
Closing Camp
It is important for LLYC to close down camp after the summer.
All staff will be expected to stay for final cleanup.
After final cleanup, staff will be dismissed on Sunday, August 10.
Family Camp
Many of you will be hired to work our new Family Camp the week of August 10-16 in Echo Valley.
Family Camp begins the day after LLYC says goodbye to all its campers.
If interested, be sure and specifically apply for staff of Family Camp.
